Should You Use Chain Link Fencing Panels For Chickens
Anyone that is thinking about building a chicken run for your chickens should consider using chain link fencing panels for chickens because it is an easy way to get it done fast. Using chain link fencing panels for chickens is very popular and hassle free.
The main attraction of using chain link fencing panels for chickens is the ease of building a custom chicken run. Anyone that has worked with chain link fencing in rolls can tell you how difficult and cumbersome it is to work with. It takes a lot of time to install and you have to have a lot more tools.
Chain link fencing panels are already premade and are a snap to put up. You can buy them at just about any local hardware store like Home Depot or even Tractor Supply, Before you go, figure out how large you are going to make your chicken run, then buy as many panels as you need, load them up and take them home. Remember to buy a gate and some fasteners or wire to secure the panels together securely. I sank some posts into the ground and concreted them in to make the enclosure very sturdy because my chicken runs are at four panels long and two panels wide. Unless you go crazy and build a huge chicken run, it should be easy to have the entire thing up in an hour or so.
One of the great thing about using chain link fencing panels for chickens is that you can construct just about any size chicken run you want. The panels come in six foot and eight foot sections and can be four, six or eight feet tall so you have a great deal of flexibility. If you find at some point down the road that you need a bigger chicken run, you can easily make it larger.
Many chicken keepers want to have a portable chicken run and chain link fencing panels can also be used for this. As long as you keep it small, it shouldn’t be to heavy to move around. My friend made a portable chicken run using chain link fencing panels. Her husband is very handy and the whole thing rolls across the ground believe it or not!
The one thing that I personally don’t like about chain link fencing panels for chickens is that they are not as predator proof as I like. Yes, they are extremely strong and predators cannot bite or chew through the fencing, but I have had chickens actually killed through the fence. I’m not going to go into graphic detail but it was very gruesome. Baby chicks can also squeeze right through the chain link when they are small.
The cost of the chain link panels can get cost prohibitive fast, especially if you want to build a very large chicken run.
If you just need a small chicken run, it won’t be nearly as expensive. Chain link is very commonly used and can easily be adapted to the needs of your chicken flock.
